I found this article today showing what would happen if the earth stopped spinning. Because it is spinning, Earth is an oblate spheroid (for those of you who don’t just sit around reading books on astrophysics for no reason like I’ve been recently, that means that it’s squashed at the poles and bulging at the equator), there’s a distortion in the water at sea level. So if the earth stopped spinning, the earth’s water would go rushing towards the poles, swallowing up lots and lots and lots of land in the process. Three of the four countries I’ve lived in (and half of the fourth)? Underwater. However, as a result of this, there are parts of the world that are currently underwater that would reemerge, creating one massive ring continent around the earth’s equator.
You should really check out the article. It’s pretty cool!
