Lesson #203: Hobo Symbols

Hobos have symbols. They’re markings carved or written onto signposts at the entrances to towns and in railway stations or on barns to indicate where to find food, water or shelter, where to avoid the cops, etc. Some symbols were universal across the country and some were like localized dialects.

I actually knew such signs existed, but I’ve never actually seen a list of them. And, evidently I’ve never really been all that focused on finding one.

As it happens, today I stumbled on one such list. It’s here. And it’s very thorough.
