Lesson #157: The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D

I came across this video illustrating the Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D and it kind of blew my mind.

Basically, what happened was in 2004 scientists pointed the Hubble telescope at a piece of space the equivalent of a 1mm x 1mm piece of paper held at the distance of one metre. That’s freaking tiny. And, awesomely, they discovered 10,000 galaxies dating back 13 billion years. Thirteen BILLION! They’re so far away that it took 13 billion years for their light to reach a high powered telescope! Many of them might not even exist anymore. We can look at a picture of galaxies that don’t exist anymore and stars that have been dead for millions of years that we’re just now seeing the light from, things that existed for almost 10 billion years before earth was created.

Space is awesome!
